Ah, The Guardian, paper of the smug and smugger alike. Its centre-left viewpoint and non-conformist graphics have turned it into more of a trophy than a paper, an pseudo-individualist relic which its readership gloats about to disinterested realists such as myself. In other words, it’s the Mac of newspapers. Yet the image they’ve worked so tirelessly to uphold has been shattered as their jobs service was spotted offering work at the BNP. What struck me most was the sheer hypocrisy of it. Narry a week ago the paper was lecturing about how the rise of the far right was a problem, and yet for some reason they see no ideological or moral problem with posting them on their (very successful) online job seeking service. Yet the scandal only just begins there. The job was listed under the ‘Greater London Authority’. Meaning that taxpayers bought the neo-Nazi white supremacists their nice big slice of publicity.
A backlash of individuals has supported The Guardian, saying that every political party has the right to advertisement. The sad thing is, that’s just not true. They were under no legal or ethical obligation to allow this to occur. Claiming that they do is like claiming you’ve got to wear the shirt of every football team, even the ones you don’t support, in order to make the game fair.
The ads now been removed- well before their scheduled date. Gloat no more, says I. Gloat no bleeding more.
